Stage #3 Leadership Focus

During this critical stage of a company's expansion, one must begin leading the company by the numbers. It’s necessary to introduce a set of systems, processes, and measurements that are firmly in place. You must think beyond the initial entrepreneurial philosophy which carried the company to its current successful state. Thus, leadership should now involve some serious professional management. Countless entrepreneurs have experienced a great deal of difficulty during this vital transition period, more often than not because their style is one of “trial and error” learning and "seat of the pants" flying. Did you ever wonder why most company founders are rapidly replaced by venture capitalists who hire an experienced CEO? Managing by the “seat of your pants” is perfectly suitable for a small company that is comprised of only 10 to 15 employees. But beyond this size, at 25 employees and above, the situation becomes quite difficult, and is a bonafide formula for disaster. Out of the five stages involved in a company’s expansion, most entrepreneurs are only adept at the first to third stages. But with enough training and flexibility, they may discover how to grow simultaneously with their company and progress into a more capable role. But this is usually unattainable without some form of outside wisdom and perspective, and a proactive effort to deal with the situation head on.
